Horsell is a village and suburb immediately north-west of Woking town centre, separated from it by the Basingstoke Canal. It has a strong village identity, with an attractive High Street of independent shops, cafés, and pubs, and a large area of protected open space at Horsell Common.
Horsell Common is famous as the setting for the Martian landing in H. G. Wells's *The War of the Worlds* — Wells lived in Woking when he wrote the novel, and the "sandpit" on the common features in the story. The common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its heathland and the Bronze Age burial mounds.
Horsell has good local amenities, primary schools, and a close-knit community, and its High Street is one of the most desirable neighbourhood shopping streets in the borough.
